Its summer and the bombs are fallin

People are getting killed
And the weather is fine
Your daddy is bombing
In the name of humanism
He is well paid baby, dont you cry.
Dont you cry.

Fly high, strike with thunders might
Win without a fight
Beat the evil and savage
Kill the lice, we are the good guys
Dont apologize for collateral damage,
Dont you cry.

Its summer and your daddy is bombing
But he wont get killed;
He flies high in the sky
He stops things from doing things;
It aint bad when these things die, when they die
Justice is done, baby dont cry

Dont you cry, daddy is flying high
You wont be bombed by the evil and savage
Dont you cry, be the winning guy
Only losers cry for collateral damage
Dont you cry.
Don’t you cry.
Don’t you cry.

One of these mornings
Your daddy will return from war
Hell come to your cradle
to take you in his arms
But until that morning baby,
No ones going to stain you with blood
Hes just doin his job,
So dont you cry.

Daddy rides the sky like a knight
Hits with stormy might
Awes the evil and savage
It’s a fair fight, we are always right
We won’t be stopped by collateral damage
Dont you cry, dont you cry, dont you

Stop these cries, we are saving lives
We are civilized
Were not evil and savage
We dont torture, we dont terrorize
Blame our enemies for collateral damage
Dont you cry, be the winning guy
We cant be stopped by
(Bye-bye)

This song is indeed tragic. It illustrates how, dare I say sinful humanity is. As a Christian I have been praying and working for peace. Recently I have been struggling with the apocalyptic idea of the Goats and the Sheep presented in Matthew’s Gospel Chapter 25: 32-34.

    Goats and Sheep
«All the nations will be gathered before Him,
and He will separate them one from another,
as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
«And He will set the sheep on His right hand,
but the goats on the left.
«Then the King will say to those on His right hand,
‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom
prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
    Matt 25:32-34

I have also been struggling with Matthew 27:16-17. In these two verses, Pilate presents two people to the crowd gathered before him and asks the crowd who should be crucified and who should be set free from prison. These two people were both named Jesus. One was called Jesus Barabbas, son of the Father, and the other was called Jesus, the Anointed. The Crowd chose to set the son of the Father free without a trial but with a tarnished reputation as a rebel, thief and murderer. The other, the anointed one, was chosen to be executed on the Cross.

This past week there was a violent riot in Acre in Israel. This was especially tragic because the riot occurred Wednesday night on the Eve of Yom Kippur, the Holiest Day in the Jewish year. This riot broke out because an Arab man drove his car into a Jewish neighborhood. Haaretz.com reported that even secular Jews living in the area do not drive their cars on Yom Kippur as a sign of respect.

Haaretz. com also reports: “The Arab man who drove into a Jewish neighborhood in Acre on the eve of Yom Kippur, sparking a series of riots and violent clashes, told the Knesset Committee of the Interior on Sunday that he would ‘sacrifice his neck’ to bring coexistence back to the bi-national northern city.” http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1028249.html

Being a Christian I am unfamiliar with the details of Yom Kippur so I turned to Wikipedia for some information. I discovered that Yom Kippur is the most solemn and important of the Jewish Holidays. In English Yom Kippur means “the Day of Atonement”.

I also discovered that on the Day of Atonement, the high priest conducts a ritual called the “Lottery of the Goats” to cleanse the people gathered of their sins.

The High Priest goes to the eastern gates called the Gates of Niknor, where two identical goats stand near a box with two lots. On one lot is written «L’Hashem» and on the other «L’Azazel». He stands between the goats and draws the lots simultaneously with both hands. He places the lots on the respective goats. When placing the lot on which «L’Hashem» is written, he proclaims the goat a «Chattas for Hashem». He ties a red band around the horns of the goat designated to be sent to Mount Azazel and turns it to face the eastern gate.

The goat marked for Hashem is killed as a sacrifice and its blood mixed with the blood of the bull, sacrificed prior to the casting of lots. The goat marked for Azazel is set free and escorted out into the desert carrying the people’s sins with it and driven off the cliff.

Mmm…in the Christian tradition, Atonement is achieved through the Eucharist. The bread is broken, the wine poured. As each Christian takes part in the Eucharist we mysteriously come into communion with each other and with God.

I hope you picked up on the fact that in the Jewish tradition the Goat who was destined for Azazel was given a red band for its horns.

In the Christian tradition it is Mary Magdalene that bears the stigma of being the scarlet woman, the woman caught in adultery, a serious act of rebellion.

But back to the Good Friday story. The rebellious person freed by the Crowd in front of Pilate is called Jesus Barabbas and the freeing of this Jesus causes Jesus the anointed one to be nailed to the Cross. The Magdalene and other women watch the anointed Jesus die.

This is the Good Friday story and of course Christians know that this story is not complete until Easter Morning. The Crucifixion and the freeing of Barabbas breaks the body of Jesus and many believers go into hiding.

But on Easter morning a miracle occurs. The broken body of Jesus becomes whole again. Atonement is achieved, but the work of restoring the divided Kingdom of Israel and living peacefully with Israel’s non-Jewish neighbours has just begun. The two people outside the tomb face to face—neither one touching or stealing the other’s sacred body—stand as a unified messianic body, as a sign of restoration and repentance. They challenge us to believe and to act upon our faith. She goes to his brothers and then to the disciples and tells them that she has seen and spoken to the Lord in person.

On this Canadian Thanksgiving Day, I thank God the Father and God the Mother for the gifts and challenges granted to me this day. I pray that Mothers and Fathers, Christians, Jews, Muslims, and non-believers realize how demonizing the other or the other’s cherished beliefs or assigning blame promotes a climate of retribution and war. Rather I pray that each of us can find a way to work together to build a climate of peace, where non-violent methods and violent methods coexist to protect the peace, harmony and security of Creation, heaven and earth forever and ever Amen.
